Troubleshooting Tips: Ice Maker Makes No Ice
You can have enough supply of homemade ice through a portable ice maker. It is a machine which is easy to use and suitable for any setting. You will enjoy its utility whether you are just relaxing at home or having a party with friends.
With a portable ice maker, you will never have trouble buying a bagful of ice as you can make enough ice for any occasion. In a day, this ice maker makes as much as fifty pounds ice so that the supply you need is well-guaranteed.
In addition, the unit makes twelve pieces of ice in about seven minutes. Hence it is most unlikely that you will spend enough time for your supply to come.
Like any other appliances, your ice maker may not turn out the ice you need as it may also experience some trouble. So you need to check the following and find out if these troubles exist to be able to restore back your ice maker in good order:
1. Check the Shutoff Arm
The ice maker has an arm extending away over the ice cube bin. This arm raises up and drops down after an ice is placed into the ice cubes bin during each ice-making cycle. If the ice accumulates in the bin the arm is prevented from dropping back down. As the arm rises high enough, the ice maker will shut off so that no ice can be made until the ice in the bin lowers down.
You can manually turn off the ice make by lifting the arm until it reaches a locked position. At one or both ends this arm is supported. One of the ends may extend into the back of the front support which means it is not securely in place and could result in malfunction. So you need to check if the arm is securely in place.
To ensure proper operation, check if the arm is in the lowered position so that nothing hinders it from its normal movement. Also, test the shutoff function by lifting the arm into the manual shutoff function. If the unit goes on making ice even if the shutoff arm is in the off position, you may refer to the diagnostic table and replace the control module.
2. Check the Supply Valve
The ice maker has a water supply line which connects to a supply valve usually located under the kitchen sink or at the back of the freezer. Once this valve is not turned on to a position allowing enough pressure, water may not fill the ice mold so the water valve located behind the freezer should be plumbed.
A timing mechanism is used to fill the ice mold. When water flows in too slowly, the ice mold will not be full until the time mechanism completes the cycle resulting in small ice cubes.
So, check the water valve if it is opened properly to allow enough water into the ice mold. The valve can be fully opened but it is better to open it just enough to have adequate pressure level. Inspect also the water supply line for dents or pinching as it might obstruct the flow of water to the ice maker.
3. Inspect the Water Supply Line
Often, the supply line runs from the water source to a valve plumbed in behind the freezer. A damage along this line may result in hindrance of water flow to the ice maker resulting in small cubes or no ice at all. Notice if there is water outside the freezer which can be caused by a leak in the supply line.You can locate this leak by finding the water supply line behind the freezer usually made up of copper or plastic connected to the water inlet valve. From this inlet valve, follow this tubing to the water source. The leak can be fixed with the replacement of this water supply line. You need however to unplug the unit first to prevent electrical shock hazard before disconnecting and replacing the supply line with a new one.
4. Test the Shutoff Switch
An ice maker has two types. To know what kind of model you are working repairs on, remove the outer face plate. If there is knob, pull it off before prying the face plate with a screwdriver. Be cautious and Don’t test the shutoff switch unless the freeze or refrigerator is not in use so as not expose yourself to possible electrical shock hazard.
The modular units of ice makers have holes in the modular face plate utilize for test probes. The holes are marked with letters. The other type of ice maker showcases component units which have gears and do not have holes for test probes.
5. Check The Freezer Temperature
The temperature level for the freezer is ideally at five degree Fahrenheit. But the refrigerator should be kept at thirty-six degrees Fahrenheit. To keep these temperatures at their ideal levels, they can be adjusted through the controls inside the freezer. The freezer temperature cannot be measured by the thermostat inside. Proper measurement can be ascertained by placing a cup of alcohol or cooking oil with a cooking thermostat into the freezer for about two hours. The oil will not freeze making it possible to measure accurately the temperature.
If you have already exhausted the following measures, you need to inspect and examine the ejector gear. There is a chance that the ejector gear is already worn out which makes it difficult to create ice. Apart from the ejector motor, you should also test the ice mold heater, the holding switch and the inlet switch.
