The Cuisinart ICE-21 has recently added a new paddle and mixing times can be as low as 15 minutes. Figuring out the proper timing for our desserts was inconvenient, but the machine performed as advertised. Still, as many reviews can attest, your mileage may vary. It does come with a three-year warranty, which is a nice bonus.
Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence Frozen Yogurt Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker
This machine is larger and more expensive than the Krups 358-70. It is primarily because it can make up to two quarts of frozen dessert. That’s nice, but more than one reviewer claimed the ice cream can sometimes overflow. That did not occur with our test, but the problem bears watching and might be a turnoff for some potential customers.
When we tested our vanilla ice cream and orange sorbet recipes with the Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence, we found that the mixing times were consistent with those as advertised. The machine is much quieter than the Cuisinart ICE-21. That just might be worth the higher price for die-hard Cuisinart fans.
The Hamilton Beach 68330N 4-Quart Automatic Ice Cream Maker
This Hamilton Beach model is the least expensive of our comparison ice cream makers. The average price is about $15 less than our tested Krups ice cream maker and around $50 less than the ICE-30R Pure Indulgence. Hamilton Beach is also a name familiar to many customers. This is a company that is a nationally known manufacturer since 1910. Low-end pricing has its advantages, and many customers are happy to take advantage of what they offer.
While we are not big fans of the ‘you get what you pay for’ theory, we can truthfully say we were unimpressed with the Hamilton Beach 68330N. While it has the advantage of stopping automatically when your frozen dessert is ready to serve, it can take a comparatively long time to get there. Still, the final result was a fine-tasting homemade ice cream dessert, and we could not discern any decrease in quality compared to the more expensive competitors.
This too is a noisy machine, and other reviewers have complained about the short cord length and lack of proper covering., but for bargain hunters, this might be the best choice.
