Krups Ice Cream Maker – Information, Uses and Benefits
"We all scream for ice cream" goes the popular song and appliances like the Krups ice cream maker can make this favorite dessert an especially fun experience. Fans of homemade sorbet or yogurt will be love this product, as the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker automates the process, and it’s a standout within the Krups family. While there are many favorable reviews about the product online, we wanted to find out for ourselves if this product lives up to its reputation.
Ice cream makers have come a long way since Nancy Johnson of Philadelphia received the first United States patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer in 1846. Today, the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker compressor model is a leader the field. No more rock salt, ice, and crank turning. Just a press of a button and homemade ice cream can be on your table in less than an hour. Now, let's look at what sets this ice cream maker apart from the competition.
Assembling the Krups Ice Cream Maker
First, that this Krups ice cream maker is easy to assemble right out of the box. Just attach the frame to the top of the bowl and then add the shield and engine to the frame. Assembled, the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker is a compact machine with a quiet engine and it was fairly simple to use the controls and keep an eye on the machine's ice cream making progress. Measuring at 9" by 13" this model has an electrical one-speed motor and can make 1-1/2 quarts of ice cream at a time.
Putting the Krups Ice Cream Maker to the Test
We followed the manual closely in our testing process. Experience has shown that a thorough reading before use is a highly recommended practice. For instance, an essential element for creating frozen desserts is making sure the ice cream maker’s cylinder are at a proper temperature. For this purpose, the Krups ice cream maker provides a double-insulated bowl you should put in the back of your freezer a day before you make ice cream for the best results.
Be sure to wrapping the cylinder bowl in a plastic bag as it will prevent any freezer burn. Storage for 24 hours is usually a reasonably safe amount of time for proper freezing. You can make up to 1 l/2 quarts (1.5 Liters) of frozen dessert in the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker. The manual cautions us not to not exceed one quart (1 Liter) of liquid, due to an increase in volume during the preparation process.
Keep in mind that with homemade ice cream recipes, mixing and matching ingredients can create less than satisfactory results. For instance, you should not add heavy ingredients like frozen liquids or whipped cream to an ice-cream recipe. Low-calorie milk might not produce the tastiest treat. The fat content in natural ice cream is considerable and reducing the content can have an effect.

- Pour mixture back into the pan

- Stir constantly (looks like very liquid pudding)
- Do not boil!
- Let cool to room temperature
- Add cream and vanilla and chill
The Krups Ice Cream Maker Test Results
After putting the now frozen freezer bowl into the Krups ice cream machine, we added our recipe mixture and started the appliance. The chill of the freezer bowl took effect as soon as our vanilla ice cream recipe churned. We checked the blend every 10 minutes to see the progress and at about the 20-minute mark the motor slowed down noticeably as our mixture increased in thickness. It took about ½ hour for the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker to make a rich and creamy dessert with an added zesty tang thanks to the orange juice.
Orange Sorbet Recipe:
- 300 g sugar
- 300 ml water
- 400 ml orange juice
- Mix the water and sugar in a pan
- Bring to a boil
- Let this syrup cool down to room temperature
- Stir in the orange juice
- Put the mixture in the refrigerator to cool down
- Variations: You can also use lemon or grapefruit juice, or pureed kiwis (in the latter case, add 1 tablespoonful of lemon juice)
Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker Product Comparisons
We wanted to expand our testing to see how this model Krups ice cream maker stacked up in comparison with other products in the same price range.
The Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream Maker
This Cuisinart is an excellent machine. Some might prefer the design of this appliance as the motor as contained at the base, not as a mix-master design as in the Krups 358-70. This can help with the cleaning process and can help prevent clogging. On the other hand, the Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream Maker has a much louder motor than the Krups ice cream maker we tested. This could make a difference for some buyers.
It is available in most stores where appliances at an average price of around $50.

EASE OF USE
3 Stars (bowl must be frozen overnight)
The Cuisinart ICE-21 has recently added new paddle and mixing times can be as low as 15 minutes. Figuring out the proper timing for our desserts was inconvenient, but the machine performed as advertised. Still, as many reviews can attest, your mileage may vary. A three-year warranty is also an added inducement to consider the Cuisinart ICE-21.
The Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence Frozen Yogurt Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker
This machine is larger and more expensive than the Krups 358-70 as wells as its cousin, the Cuisinart ICE-21. This is primarily because it can make up to 2 quarts of frozen dessert. That’s nice, but more than one reviewer claimed the ice cream can sometimes overflow. That did not occur with our test, but the problem bears watching and might be a turnoff for some potential customers.
When we tested our vanilla ice cream and orange sorbet recipes with the Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence and found that the mixing times were consistent with those as advertised. The machine is much quieter than the Cuisinart ICE-21. That just might be worth the higher price for die-hard Cuisinart fans.
Limited, 3 Years
Again, as with the ICE-21, a longer than usual three-year warranty for the Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence will make it a tempting choice for many shoppers.

The Hamilton Beach 68330N 4-Quart Automatic Ice Cream Maker
This Hamilton Beach model is the least expensive of our comparison ice cream maker Models. The average price is about $15 less than our tested Krups ice cream maker and around $50 less than the ICE-30R Pure Indulgence. Hamilton Beach is also a name familiar to many customers. This is a company has been a nationally known manufacturer since 1910. Low-end pricing has its advantages and many customers will happy to take advantage of what they offer.
While we are not big fans of the ‘you get what you pay for’ theory, we can truthfully say we were unimpressed with the Hamilton Beach 68330N. While it has the advantage of stopping automatically when your frozen dessert is ready to serve, it can take a comparatively long time to get there when tested along with the other ice cream makers we tested. Still, the final result was a fine-tasting homemade ice cream dessert and we could not discern any decrease in quality compared to the Hamilton Beach 68330N’s more expensive competitors.
This too is a noisy machine and other reviewers have complained about the short cord length and lack of proper covering. But for bargain hunters this might be the best choice or, if you are a Hamilton Beach fan, consider the Hamilton Beach 68321Z or the portable, cordless Hamilton Beach 68662 Half Pint Soft Serve Ice Cream Maker.
