Krups Ice Cream

Krups Ice Cream Maker – Information, Uses and Benefits

"We all scream for ice cream" goes the popular song, and appliances like a Krups ice cream maker can make this favorite dessert an especially fun experience. Fans of homemade sorbet or yogurt will fall in love with this product because it automates the process.

While there are many favorable reviews about Krups ice cream maker machines online, we wanted to find out for ourselves if these products live up to their reputation. Specifically, we want to take a look at the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere and compare it to some other options, including those from other manufacturers.

A Little Ice Cream Maker History

Ice cream makers have come a long way since Nancy Johnson of Philadelphia received the first United States patent for a small-scale hand-cranked ice cream freezer in 1846. These early models required a lot of attention to make up a small batch of ice cold creaminess.

Not only did you have to stand at the machine and turn a crank for hours while the ice cream mixture began to freeze but also you had to keep adjusting the levels of ice and salt you added to the machine. These ingredients did the real work in lowering the temperature inside the canister to freeze the dairy solution. If you didn't have the right balance of ice and salt, the temperature wouldn't get low enough and no matter how hard you cranked, you wouldn't get ice cream. It was a laborious process.

Today, a Krups ice cream maker does all the work for you. No more rock salt, ice, and crank turning. Just a press of a button and homemade ice cream can be on your table in less than an hour.  Now, let's look at what sets this ice cream maker apart from the competition.

Assembling the Krups Ice Cream Maker

One great point about Krups products is they are easy to assemble right out of the box. Just attach the frame to the top of the bowl and then add the shield and engine to the frame.  Assembled, it is a compact machine with a quiet motor and simple to use the controls. You can also keep an eye on the machine's ice cream making progress thanks to the clear window.

The Krups 358-70 La Glaciere ice cream maker measures in at nine by 13 inches. This model has an electrical one-speed motor and can make 1-1/2 quarts of ice cream at a time.

Putting the Krups Ice Cream Maker to the Test

We followed the manual closely in our testing process. Experience has shown that a thorough reading before use is good practice. For instance, an essential element for creating frozen desserts is making sure the ice cream maker’s cylinder is at a proper temperature.

The cylinder is a double-insulated bowl. You should put in the back of your freezer a day before you make ice cream for the best results. Be sure to wrap it in a plastic bag to prevent any freezer burn.

The manual also cautions not to exceed one quart of liquid when putting a mixture into the bowl. This is because as it freezes, the liquid will expand to the 1 1/2 quart maximum limit of the bowl.

Ice Cream Recipes

Keep in mind that with homemade ice cream recipes, mixing and matching ingredients can create less than satisfactory results. Low-calorie milk might not produce the tastiest treat. The fat content in natural ice cream is considerable, and reducing the content can have a negative effect. The same goes for reducing sugar. It is best to find a recipe that matches your needs instead of trying to alter a recipe.

With that said, here are two options to consider. We have a basic vanilla ice cream and an orange sorbet.

Vanilla Ice Cream Recipe

  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 cups cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Begin with warming the milk in a small pan while you whisk together the eggs and sugar in another bowl. Once they are mixed, add the warm milk to the mixture while whisking, and pour the mixture back into the pan. Heat slowly until thickened, making sure to stir constantly. It should look like a liquid-like pudding. Do not allow the mixture to boil. Once it is thick, let it cool to room temperature, and then add the cream and vanilla and chill.

Orange Sorbet Recipe

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 3/4 cup orange juice

Mix the water and sugar in a pan, and bring it to a boil. Let this syrup cool down to room temperature, and stir in the orange juice. Put the mixture in the refrigerator to cool down before putting in the Krups ice cream maker.

Variations: You can also use lemon or grapefruit juice or pureed kiwis with one tablespoon of lemon juice.

The Krups Ice Cream Maker Test Results

We tested both recipes. The chilled freezer bowl took effect as soon as our vanilla ice cream recipe churned. We checked the blend every 10 minutes to see the progress, and at about the 20-minute mark, the motor slowed down noticeably as our mixture increased in thickness. The sorbet reacted similarly.  It took about half an hour for the Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker to make both rich and creamy desserts.

Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker Product Comparisons

We wanted to expand our testing to see how this model Krups ice cream maker stacked up in comparison with other products in the same price range.

Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream Maker

This Cuisinart is an excellent machine. Some might prefer the design of this appliance because the motor is contained at the base and not as a mix-master design like the Krups model. This can help with the cleaning process and can prevent clogging. On the other hand, the Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream Maker has a much louder motor than the Krups ice cream maker we tested. This could make a difference for some buyers.

Pros
  • Well-known, reputable brand
  • Can make 1-1/2-quarts of ice cream
  • Transparent lid
  • Double insulated freezer bowl
  • Patent-pending mixing paddle
  • Warranty included
Cons
  • Bowl must be frozen 24 hours before use
  • Motor noisier than other machines we tested

DESIGN QUALITY

The Cuisinart ICE-21 has recently added a new paddle and mixing times can be as low as 15 minutes. Figuring out the proper timing for our desserts was inconvenient, but the machine performed as advertised. Still, as many reviews can attest, your mileage may vary. It does come with a three-year warranty, which is a nice bonus.

Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence Frozen Yogurt Sorbet & Ice Cream Maker

This machine is larger and more expensive than the Krups 358-70. It is primarily because it can make up to two quarts of frozen dessert. That’s nice, but more than one reviewer claimed the ice cream can sometimes overflow. That did not occur with our test, but the problem bears watching and might be a turnoff for some potential customers.

When we tested our vanilla ice cream and orange sorbet recipes with the Cuisinart ICE-30R Pure Indulgence, we found that the mixing times were consistent with those as advertised. The machine is much quieter than the Cuisinart ICE-21. That just might be worth the higher price for die-hard Cuisinart fans.

Pros
  • Well-known, reputable brand
  • Can make two quarts of ice cream
  • Spout for adding ingredients
  • Ease of use
Cons
  • Noisy motor compared to other models
  • Short scraper does not extend to bottom and sides
  • Expensive compared to similar ice cream makers

The Hamilton Beach 68330N 4-Quart Automatic Ice Cream Maker

This Hamilton Beach model is the least expensive of our comparison ice cream makers. The average price is about $15 less than our tested Krups ice cream maker and around $50 less than the ICE-30R Pure Indulgence. Hamilton Beach is also a name familiar to many customers. This is a company that is a nationally known manufacturer since 1910. Low-end pricing has its advantages, and many customers are happy to take advantage of what they offer.

While we are not big fans of the ‘you get what you pay for’ theory, we can truthfully say we were unimpressed with the Hamilton Beach 68330N. While it has the advantage of stopping automatically when your frozen dessert is ready to serve, it can take a comparatively long time to get there. Still, the final result was a fine-tasting homemade ice cream dessert, and we could not discern any decrease in quality compared to the more expensive competitors.

This too is a noisy machine, and other reviewers have complained about the short cord length and lack of proper covering., but for bargain hunters, this might be the best choice.

Pros
  • Nationally known brand with a large customer fan base
  • Can produce four quarts of ice cream
  • No freezer bowl preparation
  • Secure lid locking
  • Inexpensive
Cons
  • Need to add ice and rock salt
  • Noisy rattling sound might irritate some
  • Short power cord

This does have an old-fashioned look and is a bit on the bulky side, so we removed one star.

DESIGN QUALITY

While we were not particularly disappointed in the design quality, a case can be made that the mix-master construction seems a little dated. Other products we evaluated seemed more streamlined and modern.

Time to Make Some Ice Cream

The Krups 358-70 La Glaciere Ice Cream Maker is an excellent choice for those who like to make homemade ice cream regularly. Other products in this sector have their virtues. The cost and length of the warranty can be a deciding factor, though, and we did find other cheaper options with longer warranties.

While Krups is based in Germany and the name might not be as familiar to others in North and South America, the company is a manufacturing legend in Europe. It’s very difficult to go wrong with this reliable and quality ice cream maker. You can look forward to good value and a quality product when you choose this brand.
